Whistler Heliskiing: Powdering in Whistler’s backcountry
Even in the world-class Canadian ski resort of Whistler, it’s not always easy to discover untracked terrain. After each snowfall, many powder-hungry skiers rush to the slopes. Whistler Heliskiing is different. Here, everyone is guaranteed to find their own powder.
The Whistler Heliskiing area is 87 kilometers long and 54 kilometers wide, 60 times larger than the Whistler Blackcomb and Whistler Mountain ski areas combined. When the slopes in Whistler are already tracked, there are still endless opportunities to discover fresh tracks in the heliskiing area. Because every day only an average of 50 skiers ski in the huge area. Spread across 173 glaciers, there are 475 named runs and more yet to be discovered and named.
Whistler Heliskiing in the middle of the wilderness and yet close to the resort
Whistler Heliskiing is located immediately adjacent to Whistler, in the backcountry Whistler Pemberton area of British Columbia (BC), amidst the wilderness of the Pacific Coast Mountain Range. Whistler heli-skiing has a long tradition. Helicopters have been in operation for over 30 years, as Whistler Heliski was established in 1981. Vast wilderness and endless snow make Whistler a perfect place for heliskiing. A typical run is about 600 meters and 400 to 1,500 vertical meters and takes an average of 45 minutes. The terrain ranges from high alpine glacier terrain to beautiful tree skiing below the tree line.
Whistler Heliskiing for Experts and Beginners
Whistler Heliski offers a variety of packages to suit guests‘ needs and skill levels. The Classic Experience includes three runs with an average of 1,400 to 2,300 vertical meters, with seven to ten guests plus guide and pilot per group. Deep snow experience is not a must for this, advanced skiing is sufficient. The Elite Experience is a similar program with four runs and an average of 1,800 to 3,500 vertical meters for expert skiers. The Ultimate Excursion includes six runs averaging 2,700 to 4,600 vertical feet and is the choice for experts who like to go fast and master more runs. This program fits small groups of up to five people who have a similar level of skiing ability. Whistler Heliskiing also offers one-day trips, ideal for visitors to Whistler Resort. Private packages are also available upon request.
Different helis come into operation depending on the group. Classic Experience and Elite Adventure Packages fly with the Bell 205 Helicopter, which can carry a group of up to ten plus guide and pilot. For small groups of up to five guests who select the Ultimate Excursion Package, the fast and agile Bell 407 Helicopter is used. For the private Heli-Ski Package with up to four guests, there is the luxurious A-Star Helicopter, the most versatile helicopter currently on the market. The helicopters take off for all groups from Carleton Lodge. From there we take the shuttle to the Whistler Heliport.
Whistler Heliski is ideal for powder-hungry Whistler guests who want a few days of untracked terrain and a nature experience away from the resort’s countless visitors, without being completely secluded from the action. The proximity to Whistler results in numerous lodging options and Whistler’s restaurants and activities are easily accessible to heliski guests. Whisler itself is a world-class ski resort with everything your heart desires and more than suitable for warming up to heliskiing.“
