CMH Bugaboos: the first heliskiing lodge in the world

This is where it all began: The CMH Bugaboos was the first heliskiing lodge of heli pioneer Hans Gmoser. Those who ski and snowboard in the Bugaboos not only wedel through the powder snow on dreamlike, but on historic slopes.

Button_ski_kanada_1CMH Bugaboos: Hans Gmoser was a skier and mountaineer. On the mountain, the experienced alpinist left nothing to chance. And so it was no wonder that the CMH founder chose the Bugaboos, of all places, to invent heliskiing in Canada. Huge glaciers, imposing peaks crowned by granite rocks and endless downhill possibilities above and below the tree line make the area of Bugaboos Lodge one of the most beautiful heliskiing areas in the world.

CMH Bugaboos: Heliskiing lodge at almost 1,500 meters

Over 1,000 square kilometers offer 235 charted runs between 945 and 3,050 meters in the Purcells. The historic lodge, modernized several times, is located at 1,490 meters above sea level. Every passionate heliskier must have been there at least once and felt the very special atmosphere in the Bugaboos. There, where it all began, heliski history was written. And it is continued every winter day by the guests.

The Bugaboos, where CMH flies four groups with a maximum of eleven guests each to the peaks with a large helicopter, is ideal for every skier. Since the four groups are formed according to skill levels, everyone will find the right team. Those who prefer to ski together with their friends in a group can of course do so as well.

After skiing, everyone gets together at the legendary bar, where some of the greatest skiers of all time have toasted a terrific powder day, or to relax in the hot tub. The hot tub on the roof of Bugaboos Lodge is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Canada.“

Insider-Tipp

Of course, the easiest way to get to Bugaboos Lodge south of Golden is to drive into Lake Louise or Kicking Horse. But how about a little detour via Fernie? The ski resort in southeastern British Columbia offers enough for a full week of skiing and snowboarding. The slopes are challenging and the off-piste runs at Polar Peak are a real highlight – making Fernie ideal to prepare for a heliski trip in BC.
